Solutions for bags and dark circles under the eyes

Teresa de Miguel Miró

You tell us so, but the statistics do too: the presence of under-eye bags and dark circles is the primary aesthetic concern across all demographics. And it is no wonder. When they are not a symptom of pre-existing conditions, they offer clues about emotions and habits we would rather not be evident. The first step toward preventing, softening, and even eradicating them is to thoroughly understand their typology and causal factors. Keep reading; because the good news is that there are excellent solutions for under-eye bags and dark circles.

DARK CIRCLES: Classification, causes, and solutions

CLASSIFICATION:

In 2016, a team of Taiwanese researchers, YL Huang et al., classified four types:

1. Pigmented: brownish in tone, related to sun spots and melasma.

2. Vascular: bluish or purplish. These can be caused by an iron deficiency.

3. Structural: derived from the anatomy of the area itself, when it presents a pronounced hollow.

4. Mixed: a combination of the above in relation to variations in pigmentation and our own vascular and structural characteristics.

CAUSES:

The origin of all of them can be:

- endogenous, that is, hereditary or due to excessive vascularization; in which case they will give us a bit more trouble, but even so, there is much we can do to avoid and attenuate them;

- or exogenous, which has to do, once again, with our exposome; sun exposure and blue light from electronic devices, smoking, poor eating habits that lead to malnutrition and vitamin K and/or iron deficiency, certain hormonal and pharmacological treatments, skin eczema, stress, and, finally, a lack of sufficient, restorative sleep. Factors that, for the most part, are within our power to modify and correct.

COSMETIC SOLUTIONS:

Pigmented dark circles are treated like melasma or any other skin hyperpigmentation. However, due to the extreme sensitivity of the periorbital area, we will use products whose composition uses the mildest depigmenting active ingredients, such as arbutin or licorice extract. And always in our night routine.

We will reserve antioxidants and, of course, sun protection for the daytime. The combination of Antioxidants + Vitamin C + Sunscreen exemplifies a masterly use of anti-aging cosmetics. Vitamin C is also a perfect ally for fighting pigmented dark circles; especially in combination with antioxidants that help reverse the production of oxygen free radicals.

Medik8 C-TETRA EYE Lipid Vitamin C Antioxidant Serum contains tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, an extremely stable, lipid-soluble form of Vitamin C capable of penetrating the skin's lipid barrier with ease. Combined with Vitamin E (D-alpha-tocopherol, the anti-wrinkle ingredient for the eye contour par excellence), they work in synergy to multiply the serum's total antioxidant defense levels to keep the skin protected all day long.

We look for multi-function products that stimulate collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines while hydrating, brightening, and refreshing the periocular area with the proper delicacy.

For vascular dark circles, we will try to achieve proper vascularization of the area by strengthening the blood vessels. The star ingredient is topical Vitamin K. Its effectiveness is slow but guaranteed; it just requires consistency and patience.

It is precisely in vascular dark circles that our lifestyle habits play a predominant role. Alcohol, tobacco, stress, and poor sleep hygiene directly impact the weakening of blood vessel walls. That is why they are the first indicator of fatigue, worry, and lack of oxygenation.

Structural dark circles present an anatomical variable over which we cannot do anything, except play with light: brightening the area will create an optical lifting effect. Medik8 Illuminating Eye Balm uses corrective color pigments for this purpose.

UNDER-EYE BAGS. Classification, causes, and solutions

CLASSIFICATION AND CAUSES:

Under-eye bags are always structural in nature, and three main types are distinguished:

1. Anatomical: without changes in coloration with respect to the rest of the skin of the contour, they are caused by the sinking caused by the maxillary bone. They are, therefore, genetic, although they tend to become more pronounced with stress and age.

2. Structural due to fluid retention: produced by the extravasation of fluid in the area, which presents tissue distension and laxity. They can be related to hormonal, thyroid, renal, or lymphatic pathologies, so the ideal approach would be to see a doctor to rule out any of these factors first. They are distinguished by inflammation that is usually more pronounced upon waking but can remain throughout the day. They feel soft when pressed.

3. Malar: caused by a sinking of the malar fat in the area below the orbicularis muscle. They often have a "bruised" appearance that can lead to a yellowish stain. They feel consistent and harder to the touch. They can be linked to poor eating habits and high cholesterol levels.

COSMETIC SOLUTIONS:

For bags of anatomical origin, the same applies as with structural dark circles: there is little we can do from the outside except illuminate the area to create an illusion of lifting it and soften the shadows.

However, we can use firming and antioxidant products that help us slow down skin sagging by strengthening elastin fibers and collagen molecules, both proteins synthesized by cells called fibroblasts, which are what provide support, strength, and flexibility and constitute the skin's matrix.

Structural bags due to fluid retention respond very well to vasoconstrictive active ingredients such as caffeine and theobromine. An effective classic remedy would be to apply cotton pads soaked in very cold green (or black) tea.

Once any medical pathology has been ruled out, it is very helpful to reduce salt intake and take draining infusions (green tea, horsetail, fennel, or Ginkgo Biloba, among others). As it is to sleep with your head at a slightly higher elevation than your feet.

Dr. Schrammek's High Perfection Eye Cream is a light, high-tolerance cream without perfumes, emulsifiers, parabens, dyes, or mineral oils, which combines caffeine, hyaluronic acid, bio-peptides, and Biophytex®—the latter being an active ingredient especially designed to improve microcirculation, even out skin tone, and deeply soothe. In this way, we obtain capillary strengthening, elasticity, and anti-wrinkle and anti-inflammatory effects along with balsamic hydration.

PROFESSIONAL IN-CABIN TREATMENTS

As we mentioned in our post Basic Care for the Eye Contour, adopting a delicate routine specifically designed for the eye contour regularly at home will allow us to improve the vascular and inflammatory factors whose origin lies in the appearance of bags and dark circles, which will improve significantly.

But there is no doubt that it is the hands of the best professionals and the most advanced technology that take us where cosmetics alone cannot reach. We have selected our best in-cabin solutions for bags and dark circles for you. They are as follows:

DETOX MANUAL MASSAGE:

The detoxifying eye contour manual massage aims to drain the accumulated fluid and fat toward the lymphatic ducts for their elimination.

It is performed using very light rhythmic pulsations, repeated on the upper eyelids and under the eyes, from the tear duct to the temples. These alternate with a gliding rotary massage, without dragging; and an eyebrow-lifting technique, starting from the beginning of the frontal bone.

It is probably one of the most exquisite and relaxing massages one can enjoy, as the periorbital muscle group, which accumulates so much tension, is generally neglected. Tactile stimulation contributes to the penetration of the active ingredients that accompany the treatment, which are determined, as always at Beldon, by the particularities of each specific case.

Additionally, it improves circulation in the area, reduces inflammation and edema, revitalizes the skin's appearance, softens expression lines, has an analgesic effect, and induces sleep.

INDIBA:

The absolute star of cosmetic equipment at the global forefront of monopolar radiofrequency treatments, it is especially indicated for the treatment and rejuvenation of the entire eye contour, constituting one of the most effective (and pleasant) solutions for bags and dark circles.

As we well know at Beldon, beauty begins within us. And it is precisely from there that Indiba works. Its Proionic® technology promotes proper cellular function without altering its physiology, triggering—through thermal alteration (diathermy)—processes of biostimulation (subthermia), vascularization (thermia), and hyperactivation (hyperthermia).

Thus, Indiba:

  • Increases local blood flow, increasing oxygenation in cells and tissues, helping eliminate dark circles.

  • Favors lymphatic drainage and, with it, the waste of toxins and the reduction of edema and bags.

  • Increases cellular metabolism, which stimulates natural repair processes and the production of collagen and elastin, keys to anti-aging skin elasticity (expression lines, wrinkles).

  • Possesses a tightening and anti-sagging effect, both immediate and cumulative, which contributes to lifting the tail of the eyebrow and the general opening of the gaze.

  • Provides hydration and luminosity.

It accelerates tissue repair, prevents scarring, and is excellent as a pre/post-surgical aid and to prepare the eye contour skin for medical-aesthetic treatments.

ACCENT PRIME:

This next-generation treatment combines two technologies: MiniSpeed™ Ultrasound (designed specifically to offer an effective treatment in small areas) and Unipolar™ radiofrequency. The synergy of both multiplies their benefits, achieving visible progress in less time.

Its mechanism focused on various depths of the skin allows for greater control and better results without damaging the tissues. In this way, we can customize the treatment to achieve:

  • An increase in vascularization that prevents and improves dark circles.

  • Boost fluid and fat drainage, with immediate action on bags.

  • Cellular regeneration that improves skin elasticity.

  • Stimulate the formation of new collagen.

  • Visibly soften wrinkles and expression lines.

  • Improve skin texture and even out tone.

  • Achieve brighter, more hydrated skin.

  • A lifting and rejuvenating effect.
