How to avoid fluid retention?
Teresa de Miguel Miró
If you have ever asked yourself the question, "How can I prevent fluid retention?", be careful; it is more common in summer, and aesthetically—even if it is just accumulated fluids—it compromises the results so deservedly earned during your pre-summer shape-up. Do not let fluid retention add volume to your silhouette.
The first step is to determine the cause of the problem, which is not always the same. At this point, you should set aside your intuition or the opinions of well-meaning friends and put yourself in the hands of an aesthetic specialist who can assess whether it is really fluids or a fat-related problem, and rule out conditions like lipedema or poor liver or kidney function.
At Beldon Beauty, we have a tool that allows us to differentiate adipose tissue from fluid accumulation. It is a very precise measurement system that also provides us with data on the progress of the process.

SYMPTOMS OF FLUID RETENTION
Do not hesitate to go to the experts if you don't know how to prevent fluid retention, especially in these cases:
– You have been very good—diet-wise—but the scale swears you weigh three kilos more and you are not premenstrual.
– Socks and tights leave marks on your calves or ankles.
– You feel like you are dragging chains every time you take a step, and your legs feel heavy.
– Cellulite has visibly worsened, and the skin shows a quilted effect.
– Your skin ‘hurts’ to the touch and you get bruises from the slightest bump against the corner of a table.
– Loss of waist definition is another symptom to keep in mind.
– Urination is less frequent.

WHEN CELLULITE IS A CONSEQUENCE OF FLUID RETENTION
Do not be surprised by the fifth symptom. Cellulite is directly linked to this problem—in fact, it is the main cause—and no treatment is worth anything if there is poor fluid drainage. The explanation is very simple: fluid accumulation hinders circulation and promotes the growth of adipocytes.
There is no anti-cellulite cream that does not include draining active ingredients in its formula, and the best salon treatments never forget to dedicate a large percentage of their time to easing circulation.

CAUSES OF FLUID RETENTION
They are varied; generally, they respond to circulatory problems, and we cannot ignore that heat worsens it by dilating the veins, but there are also certain lifestyle habits that cause it. These are the most common:
- Excess salt. To understand it, just think about what happens when you eat a bag of sunflower seeds in one sitting.
- Drinking little water. It may sound contradictory, but the less water in the body, the greater the retention.
- A sedentary lifestyle. Nothing like a lack of exercise to slow down circulation.
- Excessively tight clothing. The looser you dress, the better everything will flow.
- Standing for long periods. It is proven that jobs that require standing are directly linked to greater fluid retention.
- Being overweight. Every excess kilo slows down circulation.
DIET TO ELIMINATE FLUID RETENTION IN THE BODY
There are many ‘covert’ enemies in the form of foods that you probably don't even suspect, but doing without them is the best prevention.
- Watch out for dairy. Are you aware of the high sodium content in cheeses or yogurts? Always look for the ‘low salt’ version.
- Less sauce. You cannot imagine the sodium they contain. Try to avoid mustard, barbecue sauce, or ketchup.
- Are you crazy about ‘salty’ snacks? Potato chips, nuts… they are the worst snack option if you have a tendency to retain fluids.
- Reduce the consumption of canned foods. As well as pâtés or smoked products.
- Pre-cooked meals, better not. Both these and processed foods require flavorings and additives that are loaded with sodium.
- No alcohol. It is harmful to the proper functioning of the circulatory system, kidneys, and liver.
- No smoke. Tobacco is the first thing doctors forbid before undergoing any operation, and it is not just to facilitate healing. Tobacco obstructs blood circulation.

GOOD HABITS TO ADOPT STARTING NOW
- Move. Physical activity activates circulation and, with it, renal activity. Walk, swim, run…
- Get up and walk. Sedentary jobs require taking a mandatory break every 20 minutes to take a few steps and ease circulation.
- Legs up. Whenever decorum permits, put them up on the table.
- The pillow, at your feet. Nothing like elevating the mattress at the level of the lower extremities to improve circulation. You will wake up with rested legs.
- Infusions, at all hours. They are ideal for draining the body. The most active ones are green tea, fennel, and horsetail.
- Drink to eliminate. A minimum of two liters of water a day. It is the best shortcut to ‘unclog the pipes’ and get the circulation flowing as it should.
A BASICALLY FEMALE PROBLEM
It is no coincidence that it affects more women than men. The hormonal factor has a lot to do with fluid retention, and it is the female gender that lives adjusting to its fluctuations.
The days leading up to menstruation are the clearest example. You can retain up to 3 kilos—according to the scale and our favorite jeans—and the reason is that estrogen and progesterone increase water retention.
The same thing happens during menopause, but more definitively; furthermore, it concentrates in the ankles, legs, abdomen, and even the arms.

THE BEST TREATMENTS FOR FLUID RETENTION
At Beldon Beauty, we know it is a problem that affects many women, and we have the tools, both in the salon and cosmetic, to facilitate drainage, activate circulation, and lighten the legs.
BRAZILIAN TOUCH MASSAGE
This special massage is 100% manual and combines classic lymphatic drainage with shaping and reducing movements.
It is focused on stimulating the natural drainage of the lymph nodes in order to eliminate waste and toxins from the body while reshaping the silhouette and reducing the appearance of cellulite.
The massage begins with a “pumping technique,” applying gentle pressure to stimulate lymphatic flow, and then more energetic, intense, and localized movements are performed to mold the figure.
It reduces the appearance of cellulite, molds the silhouette, improves blood circulation, activates metabolism, fights swelling, facilitates weight loss, improves skin elasticity, relieves leg heaviness, and detoxifies the body.
DRAINING EFFECT COSMETICS
With rising temperatures, it becomes your best ally. To multiply its effects, you can keep it in the fridge, or better yet, get a mini cosmetic fridge. In this post on how to store cosmetics, we tell you why.
Bodyshock Celluxpert by Mesoestetic
A cream with a gel texture that manages to define, tone, and smooth the skin of the body. It uses a combination of active ingredients to visibly improve the appearance of cellulite while helping to achieve a more defined silhouette.
Crème Liposulpt AC by Biologique Recherche
A body cream with triple action: it reduces, remodels, and tones the skin. It is enriched with Corallina Officinalis extract, which limits fat storage, decreases the thickness of adipose tissue, and acts on cellulite while restructuring the skin and giving it a firm and toned appearance.
