Skin care in teenagers
Teresa de Miguel Miró
They aren't worried about wrinkles, but they are capable of spending hours in front of a magnifying mirror hunting for a non-existent pimple. Skin care for teenagers is complicated. They enter the cosmetic market through makeup and hair styling and coloring products, and beyond quality, they seek to strictly follow prevailing trends. They stretch their meager budgets by investing in any product endorsed by the YouTuber or influencer they revere, and yet, they refuse their mothers' advice. Rebellion demands it.
Between the ages of 11 and 19—the official window for adolescence—they prefer the advice of their friends. And no matter how much their mothers insist on the importance of hydration and cleansing, on extending skin care to the neck, or on the importance of taking care of their hair and not subjecting it to unnecessary chemical aggressions, they feel safe from the ravages of time.
That said, they have mastered the art of double eyeliner since they were 13, have known how to bleach their own hair since they were 14, and camouflage imperfections with the same skill as a professional makeup artist.
- At Beldon Beauty, we are concerned about their skin's future, and we encourage them to try our free online consultation. Through it, they can access professional advice that takes many factors into account. We start from the fact that excess oil and pimples are their biggest concern, but they are not the only issues to keep in mind when creating the perfect skin care routine for adolescents.
We know that the skin of minors is thinner and in the midst of hormonal development. It is essential to opt for safe cosmetics, and it is a proven fact that more and more cases of acne are being seen, caused by excess makeup, the presence of endocrine disruptors in some creams, or cases of contact dermatitis and skin sensitivity.

TEENAGE SKIN PROBLEMS
We complain about the changes the skin experiences during menopause, but the hormonal changes that mark puberty and are noticeable on the complexion are also significant. During this stage of skin care for teenagers:
- Hormones are relentless. It is a stage of life in which the body produces a higher amount of estrogens, but also androgens, such as testosterone. And watch out for that! We know that estrogens act on the skin, softening its appearance, favoring the production of collagen and elastin, and facilitating its regeneration process and its natural hydration capacity. But... they are not the only hormones that drive these changes.
- The increase in testosterone also causes a greater increase in pore size and greater production of excess sebum. In addition, during the menstrual cycle, which begins right at puberty, hormone levels are very irregular, and the body has to cope with them. This fluctuation is reflected in the skin, causing a greater amount of oil and the appearance of pimples and blemishes.
- Acne is their worst nightmare, and it occurs when hair follicles become clogged with sebum and dead cells. Its signs are varied: from mild and occasional pimples or blackheads to deeper pustules, cysts, and nodules.

FACIAL CARE FOR TEENAGERS
They don't need much, but they do need to strictly follow this 5-step beauty routine for teenage skin care.
At Beldon Beauty, we insist on the importance of a good cosmetic routine from an early age. Between the ages of 12 and 19 is when major skin changes occur, and from before that age, well-established habits such as facial cleansing or the use of light moisturizers with SPF should be introduced. Skin care for teenagers is about not saturating the skin and helping it breathe better so it can oxygenate and fight the agents that try to block it.
- Double cleansing: Morning and night. External agents must not be allowed to run wild, and for that, cleansing is the first line of defense. The perfect cleanser? Oil-free, of course, and capable of absorbing oil and being ruthless with impurities and pollution while leaving the skin hydrated and comfortable. If it has natural ingredients, even better. Mousses, lotions, and micellar waters are the best option.
- Exfoliation: Three times a week. Skin free of impurities—and dead cells—does not tolerate excess sebum or any external agent clogging the pores. Opt for mechanical peels, and among their ingredients, look for those with mattifying, seborregulating, or purifying action.
- Purifying masks. They are mandatory at least one day a week if you want to show off smooth skin free of impurities. Some start with the idea that pores have an important function for skin physiology because they expel sweat or sebum secretions, but that excess is not necessary, and the smaller they are, the better.
- Light hydration – and oil-free. The biggest mistake our 'girls' make is thinking that oily skin doesn't need hydration, and nothing could be further from the truth. Dehydration causes acne breakouts, and this is the first line of defense they should opt for. Mind you, the textures have to win them over. Seduce them with 'soufflé' effect creams, invisible gels, or imperceptible mists.
- SPF mandatory. We 'grown-ups' know it's the best insurance for youth. But they can't even imagine it yet. We have to convince them that a moisturizer with SPF is the best anti-aging treatment—no matter how far away they see that. There are definitely options.
