A perfect tan for every skin type
Teresa de Miguel Miró
A perfect tan for every skin type... It exists! And it's not a matter of spending more or less hours in the sun. Your skin phototype, age, skin type, and lifestyle are the only factors that matter. Don't be swayed by sensory preferences, and don't limit yourself to buying just one sunscreen for the whole family. Our derma-advisor knows which specific products you need to achieve a radiant and healthy tan. Pay attention to everything she has to say:
FREE PRELIMINARY FACIAL DIAGNOSIS
Did you know that one in three sun care buyers lets the brand influence their choice, and only 37% take professional recommendations into account? Our free facial diagnosis in Madrid is decisive when it comes to 'prescribing' the best personalized sun protection routine. But if you don't have time to stop by Beldon before packing your suitcase, try to keep in mind everything our derma-advisor recommends.
Your body has an average of two square meters of skin that must be thoroughly protected, every millimeter, so it doesn't suffer the devastating effects of UV radiation. But if you also want to treasure the best tan of your life (even, luminous, long-lasting, and healthy), it's not enough to just reach for the highest SPF. Customizing your sun routine is key, and there are four basic factors to consider.
PHOTOTYPE. A SUN PROTECTION INDEX FOR EVERYONE

There are those who 'lower' it as they get tan, or use a higher one for their face and relax when applying it to their legs or abdomen. That is not a good idea.
The phototype is the skin's capacity to absorb solar radiation, and it determines a person's response to the sun's rays and their ability to tan, as well as their time limit for sun and UV ray exposure before burning.
There are 6 phototypes, ranging from the fairest, most sun-sensitive skin to black skin that cannot burn. In Spain, the most common are phototypes III and IV, and their ideal protection index would be between 50 and 30.
* In case you didn't know, SPF indicates the time the skin can withstand being in the sun before an erythema appears, and practically speaking, the highest ones provide similar protection. A cream with SPF 30 absorbs more than 92% of UVB radiation, and one with the same formula and SPF 50 would absorb 97%.
SKIN TYPE, AGE, AND LIFESTYLE
The phototype determines the level of protection needed. A perfect tan for every skin type:
- Skin type (oily, combination, or dry) should be taken into account when choosing a texture: gels and sprays for oilier or combination skin.
- Lotions, milks, and creams for drier skin.
- The level of skin sensitivity and its biological age should influence your choice of specific formulas.
- Allergen-free with soothing ingredients for more sensitive skin, or anti-aging, firming, or anti-spot active ingredients for mature skin.
Lifestyle—and what you do at the beach—must also influence your choice. If you practice sports outdoors or in the water, using waterproof formulas is mandatory. Our derma-advisor also insists on the importance of using a specific sunscreen for the face and another for the body. Find the full range in our sun care collection.

TIPS FOR A BEAUTIFUL TAN
Once you have chosen the type of sunscreen that best suits your skin type and circumstances, you need to know how to use it to get a tan that is as beautiful as it is safe. Did you know that only two out of 100 people follow the basic measures that guarantee the effectiveness of sunscreen?
Our derma-advisor gives us a basic lesson on its use to achieve a perfect tan for every skin type:
- If it has been open since last summer, throw it away. Once opened, their lifespan is ephemeral, exactly as marked on the container. As for keeping them unopened from one year to the next, as long as they are stored in a dry place, away from light and at a constant temperature, there is no problem.
- The right dose. No less than 2 ml of product per square centimeter of skin, which in everyday terms would be nine teaspoons. You are doing something wrong if you have been using the same product for more than a week.
- Apply it before arriving at the beach. Unless it is a physical filter, you should wait for it to blend into the skin and exert its protective action. Don't jump straight into the water, and try to put it on just before leaving the house.
- It must be reapplied. Every two to three hours at most, and every time you swim once you have dried off completely.
- No more than two hours a day. This is the time limit you should be directly exposed to the sun each day. And be careful, water reflects and increases solar radiation; sand increases the radiation that hits it by 30%, and even damp grass is a great reflector that bounces 20% of the radiation back onto the skin. You aren't safe in the water either. Even diving a meter below the surface, you are still receiving 100% of the radiation.
- Avoid midday hours. And not just to avoid crowds. Between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, it is better to stay safe under an umbrella. The sun hits vertically and is more aggressive.
- Aftersun is mandatory. Don't resort to a conventional moisturizing lotion. What your skin needs after a day in the sun is a cocktail of soothing, repairing, and nourishing ingredients. Furthermore, aftersun is the product that makes the difference between a 'normal' tan and a radiant, homogeneous, and long-lasting one.
