Skin Fasting o ayuno de la piel

Skin Fasting or skin fasting

Teresa de Miguel Miró

It’s the talk of the town, but neither the term skin fasting nor the philosophy that accompanies it are new. The Japanese brand Mirai Clinical coined it a decade ago to refer to the temporary abandonment of one's cosmetic routine. What is skin fasting based on, and what benefits does it provide?

The theory is that by eliminating all cosmetic application, we allow the skin to recover its homeostasis—that is, its ability to maintain a stable internal condition—providing it with the opportunity to reset itself through detoxification and self-repair.

NOT EVERYTHING IS SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE

That is our mantra, because every complexion is different and its needs vary as its exposome changes.

Skin fasting

A certain cosmetic minimalism is welcome as a counterpoint to the extensive routines originating from Korea, such as the well-known “7 skins” method.

Just as an excess of products is not only an unnecessary waste but also highly detrimental, going without all of them at once is also disproportionate and can be harmful. In fact, there is no scientific study that supports its supposed benefits.

Because you have to know what we are talking about: when we say skin is dry, is it due to a sebum deficit? In which case, perhaps moisturizers could be dispensed with for a while to try to restore its natural production (minimum 2-3 weeks), even at the cost of causing other imbalances. Or is it due to hormonal causes, seasonal dehydration, sudden temperature changes, medication, or other more serious alterations like eczema and psoriasis? Because in these cases, if the barrier function is already compromised, eliminating humectants can worsen pre-existing conditions and lead to atopic dermatitis.

Skin fasting

As for detoxification, the skin already performs that function excellently. After all, that’s its job. What certainly helps, in addition to a diet based on seasonal fruits and vegetables and generous hydration, is choosing the ideal, precise, and toxin-free cosmetic products. One of the numerous advantages of molecular cosmetics is that it allows for the effective delivery of various active ingredients without overloading the skin.

Basic rules for a safe skin fast

  • Do not skip your hygiene routine. Morning and night. The skin still needs gentle cleansing with suitable products.

  • Do not skip a delicate weekly exfoliation. Epidermal turnover continues on its course.

  • Do not deprive the eye contour area of its daily care with products specifically designed for our most fragile zone.

  • Do not stop an acne treatment. Suddenly giving up the active ingredients we use for its prevention and treatment will cause breakouts and worsening.

  • Do not suspend any treatment for any other type of skin condition.

  • Do not stop a treatment with Vitamin A. As we have seen, the adaptation protocol for retinol is prudent—slow and progressive—to build tolerance. If you stop the supply of retinol suddenly, the progress made will have been of little use, and we will have to start the protocol from scratch when resuming it.

  • DO NOT SKIP SUNSCREEN. Never. In our post Solar Cosmetics we explain extensively why photoprotection is essential 365 days a year. Even more so if we are not providing our complexion with a minimum of moisture and antioxidants to serve as a shield and support.

LESS IS MORE

However, "less is more" might be exactly what your skin is crying out for. Perhaps, instead of talking about a skin fast, we can talk about a skin diet.

At Beldon Beauty, we advocate for the conscious use of cosmetic products: exactly those needed to cover the peculiar and unique needs of each person.

And it was precisely with a focus on simplifying our routine and returning to quality basics that the cosmetic brand Ayuna was born. Its creators, two Spaniards of recognized prestige in the beauty industry, sought to offer the skin more with less without neglecting excellence, through cutting-edge research that allows for the best formulation. Also with environmental awareness in mind. All this is achieved "with the intersection of the natural, high technology, and luxury," articulated in a process of innovation, product, and method.

Their mottos “Less is Beauty” and “A tribute to simple beauty” say it all. In the words of Ayuna: “The best beauty routine is achieved, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. Our commitment is based on simplifying skin care: supporting the complexion with precision, providing it only with those elemental and basic ingredients to achieve maximum skin performance.” You can discover more about this brand's philosophy and its creators in our Beldon Stories.

Half the success of a cosmetic routine lies in CHOOSING WELL. It is often convenient to re-evaluate our beauty habits through a diagnosis that will allow us to determine what we truly need, which will be efficient, comfortable, pleasant, and offer optimal results.

At Beldon Beauty, we place special importance on honest advice. Our philosophy is that the protocol is defined by each person and that not everything is suitable for everyone. Consult us; we have a Bespoke Online Advice service at: https://baldonbeauty.com/asesoramiento-online-a-medida/.
