Caída del cabello en otoño ¿Es normal?

Is hair loss normal in autumn?

Teresa de Miguel Miró

Yes, but that doesn't mean you have to resign yourself to it. If hair is strong and nourished and the scalp is in perfect condition, autumn hair loss—this season—can remain what it is: a seasonal 'scare,' much like the one that occurs in spring. The problem begins when the hair is damaged, dry, and brittle, or the microcirculation of the scalp is not functioning as it should. In this scenario, telogen effluvium can become chronic and end up causing alopecia.

Before you panic, you should know some facts that will surely help you breathe a sigh of relief, even if you find a clump of hair in your brush every morning. An adult woman has between 100,000 and 150,000 follicles responsible for generating hair on the scalp. Density varies. When we are born, we have no less than 1,000 follicles per cm2, but that number decreases with age, reaching about 250 per cm2 around the age of 40.

Another aspect that must be understood very well is that each follicle grows independently of those surrounding it. Its development is not synchronous, and each one must fulfill the three phases that make up each hair life cycle, which lasts about 10 years.

  1. Anagen: During the anagen phase—which lasts between two and eight years—hair grows continuously at a rate of one centimeter per month.

  2. Catagen: The next phase is the catagen, and in this one, the hair takes a well-deserved rest of between a month and a month and a half.

  3. Telogen: The third phase is the one that causes the most fear; during the telogen phase, the hair begins to detach and fall out until, two or three months later, a new cycle begins.

But remember! We are talking about one specific follicle that does not necessarily follow the same rhythm as the other 150,000. It is normal for 15% of your hair to always be in the shedding phase.

WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD YOU USE FOR HAIR CARE?

Every head of hair is unique, and first of all, you must perfectly identify your hair type and its priorities. You should know that, as a general rule, shampoo should be specific to your hair type (oily, dry, normal, or—the always difficult-to-manage—combination hair with oily roots and dry ends).

Once you have chosen the most suitable shampoo for your case, it is time to set priorities and turn to conditioners, masks, or pre-wash treatments that address the issues you are most concerned about. Lack of shine, split ends, lack of volume, fragility, frizz...?

And don't forget the scalp!

Exfoliants, oils, ampoules, and other treatments intended for this 'peculiar' skin are not just a trend but a real necessity. Think of the scalp as the stage where hair health is fostered, and it must be kept free of impurities, detoxified, and with circulation in perfect condition to remain well-balanced.

We give you some ideas based on different hair types and their issues regarding autumn hair loss:

YOUR WASHING ROUTINE FOR AUTUMN HAIR LOSS

Dyed or colored hair? When you dye your hair, it becomes drier and more fragile, so in addition to strengthening it to prevent breakage, it is advisable to use a conditioner that seals the cuticle well to avoid pigment loss and keep the color vibrant for longer.
