Interview with

Elizabeth González

and the importance of feeding (ourselves) properly

Biography

I studied nutrition, a subject that has interested me greatly since I was a little girl, and I enjoyed it very much. Later, I studied a degree in Food Science and Technology and continued my training in maternal nutrition, which I find to be a fascinating topic.

When was @Mamá Slow born? What is behind this project, which has also become a book?

It was born from my own motherhood and my patients. From all those concerns that did so much good for me and my children. I realized the lack of valuable information available for taking care of ourselves; I only heard phrases like “you’re a mother now, that’s just how it is,” or “taking care of yourself or feeling good is over…” But I began to discover that motherhood is a unique opportunity to dust off the best versions of ourselves. To enjoy time with our children and live from our own truth. So, I felt a great urge to share this with more women.

How does good nutrition affect our lives? What is the best way to maintain a balanced diet?

We eat about 5 times a day; it is one of the activities we do most often, so the impact is very, very significant. It is felt when we don't eat what helps us most, but it is also incredibly positive when we find the way of eating that is perfect for us and our lifestyle. I believe the best way to nourish ourselves is by listening—when we listen to our unique needs and value them, from there we can find the nutrients ready to help us.

When does a baby start to develop a relationship with food?

According to the most prestigious scientific journals, a woman’s nutrition several years before she becomes pregnant will have a major impact on the health of her future children. At that stage, they aren't touching food yet, but indirectly and significantly, it will have a lot to do with them. I believe all women deserve to have this type of information. Later on, they start as soon as we hold them in our arms and they see us eat. That is when they learn what mom eats, what it smells like, and what it tastes like if they are breastfed. Taking care of our nutrition during motherhood is, without a doubt, a gift for both.

In the long term, where do you see yourself?

I don’t usually think too much about the future. I do have a clear direction, and I trust that whatever comes is for the best. In the long run, I would love to live in the countryside, and I know I will continue doing this work. In what format and how? Life will tell me.

What advice would you give parents to raise their children with good nutrition?

That they start with themselves—to eat the way they would like their children to eat. Children learn their eating patterns by watching how people eat at home, what mom and dad eat, and what mealtimes are like. And then, to dedicate the same patience, love, and respect that they show with other areas of learning. No parent expects a child to know how to multiply in their first year of school. This is the same thing, only their nutritional education will be a key factor for their health for the rest of their lives. It is worth it.

Do you think it is important to eat and share meals as a family?

Super important. I think it is the tipping point between a daily struggle and things flowing naturally. When we eat with children, we have a golden opportunity for them to see how we eat, to learn, to give them love and confidence, and so that, beyond the amount they eat from their plate, they develop a good relationship with food. Having a good relationship with food is a gift.

What is your nutrition like? What aspects are the most important for you to keep in mind?

For me, nutrition is a super tool that I use every day. To keep the children from getting sick, or when one of us is, to have more energy or concentration, etc. It is authentic medicine. Regarding our dishes, they are simple, using foods from the garden or the market; almost everything in the pantry is healthy, which makes it easy for combinations to be healthy in a natural way. Nutrition is very powerful.

In the long term, where would you like to reach?

I feel that MamaSlow has only just begun and I have many things to share so that we can enjoy and take advantage of all the power of nutrition and nature in our home together. Wonderful things are coming.

Relationship with beauty:

What is beauty to you, and how do you live it in your routine?

It is the light we radiate when we are ourselves. I believe there is nothing more beautiful than an authentic person.

What or who inspires you in your day-to-day life?

My children; I love their free, cheerful, and uncomplicated way of being.

Who are your beauty icons?

One of them is my mother; I love her style, which is so uniquely hers.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

I think it was during my training in floral therapy; they taught us about flowers that help with self-esteem and stop us from obsessing over our insecurities. It helped me and it still does.

 Beauty Questionnaire:

What is your care routine?

I apply "less is more" more and more. I wash my face with natural soap, use jasmine or rosehip hydrosol, and an essential oil serum. Afterwards, a little concealer, cream blush, and mascara. And, of course, a good breakfast ;)

A foolproof trick or product

A good natural soap that you like so much and is so great that you can use it for your face, your body, and for the kids. It gives me peace of mind.

How do you care for your beauty from the inside?

By speaking to myself with love and being compassionate and encouraging to myself.

Is there anything left for you to learn or try in the beauty world?

I am sure there are many things. I really enjoy discovering natural products that are free of endocrine disruptors—simple products, but with intention.

What are your favorite treatments?

Going to Beldon Beauty is always a treat. A few weeks ago, I enjoyed a Brazilian massage and it was magical. I also love how the Instant Glow treatment leaves my skin; it is unbeatable.
