Teresa de Miguel Miró

Interview with

Beatriz of the Young Men

founder of Flabelus

Biography

Beatriz studied Law and qualified as a lawyer in 2014. During her career, she worked at White & Case in Madrid, completed a postgraduate program in "Comparative Politics" at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and continued her career in London at the fund-of-funds Chenavari Partners. Sometime later, she decided to take the leap into a new opportunity: Sales Manager at Luminance, a start-up with revolutionary Artificial Intelligence technology for lawyers.

At Luminance, she became Global Co-Head of Sales, led the department, traveled around the world, and opened 27 new markets for the company. There, thanks to her experience in the field and with clients, she discovered new business lines for the technology, which paved the way for large companies to also begin using AI.

When was the firm founded? Why did you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I founded Flabelus while I was still Co-Head of Sales at Luminance, as a personal project during the months of low activity during Covid (February 2020). I left in September 2020 to dedicate myself fully to growing Flabelus as a global business, and I hired my first employees in December 2020.

I don't think there was a specific turning point in my decision-making process. Suddenly, I was an entrepreneur, and suddenly, things kept working. It all started with curiosity, a design, my search for a supplier who could improve it, and from there, one thing led to another, and here we are.

“The soul of a pair of shoes can only be provided by artisan hands. Just as the soul of a world can only be provided by the imagination of a dreamer.”

How would you convey what Flabelus is to someone who doesn't know the brand? What makes it special?

Flabelus began very closely tied to Spanish craftsmanship; it has been part of its history from the very beginning. An innovative product in the hands of espadrille artisans who use centuries-old techniques for a modern product. Without the artisans, Flabelus would have no reason to exist. Ultimately, it is very important to me that the project, the shoes, the idea—our world, in short—has a soul. And the soul of a pair of shoes can only be provided by artisan hands. Just as the soul of a world can only be provided by the imagination of a dreamer. I believe we have all of that at Flabelus.

If you look back and think about these years of dedication, what are you most proud of?

That's a good question, and I could give you many answers. Of course, I look back and say, "Wow, look at everything we've achieved!" I am proud of my team, of Flabelus for being such a well-loved shoe, of our stores in 3 countries, and of the rapid growth. But what I am truly most proud of is my personal and professional growth along the way. I do this for myself. For the dreamy little girl Bea was, and for the adult Bea who continues to dream. And Flabelus has given me a foundation, a serenity, a way of facing life, and learning in every sense that I wouldn't trade for anything. And I am very, very proud of all that knowledge acquired, and of the woman I am now thanks to Flabelus.

Relationship with beauty:

What is beauty to you, and how do you experience it in your daily routine?

For me, beauty is being comfortable with yourself; it is naturalness, art, health, personality, wisdom, experience, serenity, well-being, confidence, and self-assurance. In my day-to-day life, I take care of myself with simple but effective routines.

What or who inspires you in your daily life?

My family has always been my daily source of inspiration. Seeing my parents and siblings always being there, supporting and comforting each other, lifting everyone up, and facing every problem together fills me with strength and inspiration.

“For me, beauty is being comfortable with yourself; it is naturalness, art, health, personality, wisdom, experience, serenity, well-being, confidence, and self-assurance.”

Who are your beauty icons?

The truth is, my mother and my grandmother. Both are very elegant women, always stylish, sober, with the beauty that age, experience, poise, serenity, kindness, and responsibility give them. They are impressive on the inside, and they project it on the outside. They are a true example.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

From a very young age, my parents taught us that it is okay to dream, but that you have to work hard to make those dreams come true. That nothing happens by chance. And here we are, working very hard.

Beauty Questionnaire:

What is your skincare routine?

Each morning, my routine begins by washing my face with cold water. Next, I apply a few drops of serum, followed by a daytime moisturizer with SPF 50. And at night, I follow the same method, but with a specific night product. That's how I manage!

An infallible trick or product:

For me, the key is wearing almost no makeup, and what I do use must be hydrating and oil-free—as natural as possible. I try to keep my skin free of makeup whenever I can; I think it's important for the skin to breathe.

How do you take care of your beauty from the inside?

I work hard on my mental health, on maintaining a mental balance to get through my day-to-day as best as I can, although with all the stress my daily life entails, it is a continuous battle. I also take great care of my diet—not in terms of quantity, which doesn't seem healthy to me, but in terms of foods that make me feel good and don't cause inflammation. I have poor digestion, and I have to be very careful with what I eat so I don't feel unwell all day. I think it is essential to exercise and find little moments of complete disconnection. The latter is still a work in progress, but I know it is very important.

Is there anything left for you to learn or try in the beauty world?

Of course, everything! I am passionate about learning. Now that I’m in my 30s, I think it’s fundamental to be extremely well-informed, and I increasingly realize the need to be better educated from a young age regarding what we eat, how we take care of ourselves, establishing a routine, and learning to distinguish what works for each person and what makes them feel good in terms of health. A routine from a young age helps a lot in being comfortable with yourself—not to be perfect, but to be well and healthy, which for me is true beauty.

What are your favorite treatments? (From Beldon Beauty)

That is a difficult question; I like them all! I am a huge fan of Beldon Beauty. My favorites are Sculpting Facial, ideal for achieving skin without imperfections, and Tension Recovery Massage, perfect for releasing daily muscle tension.
